Hank might lose his job to a dog who comes on the ranch!
This is a great and heartwarming addition to the "Hank the Cowdog" series. Along with tons of hillarious gags, this is one of Hank's best!

Ewing Young - Master Trapper
Published in Hardcover by Binford & Mort Pub (May, 2001)
Authors: Kenneth L. Holmes and Binford & Mort Publishing
Average review score:

Excellent adventure story/biography for teenagers
My great-grandmother inexplicably had this autographed copy of Holmes' Ewing Young: Master Trapper among her things. I first read it around the age of 9, and I was definitely enthralled and excited by Young's biography. It was all the more real living in the Chehalem Valley, around Newberg, Oregon; right where Ewing Young actually had walked. He died in the Red Hills of Dundee, which is about two miles from my home (and where my 4th grade teacher lived, oddly enough). I think kids and jr. high'ers will be just as enthralled as I was by this.

Eyewitness Phrase Book: Japanese (with cassette)
Published in Paperback by DK Publishing (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Keiko Holmes, Anthony P. Newell, Lexus, Dorling Kindersley Publishing, and DK Travel Writers

GOOD FOR BEGINNERS
This book has a lot words in Japanese that you will have to know when visiting a country that speaks the language. If you mispronounce words from the book while speaking to someone, don't worry, they will correct your pronunciation and anunciation. I highly recommend that you get audio tapes so you can not only learn the tranlations from English to Japanese, but you can learn to pronounce them correctly as well. I am currently on a seven month deployment in Okinawa, Japan, as an Infantry Officer in the United States Marine Corps. This book has been a great help and it is small enough to stick in your pocket and read later when you are waiting for an appointment, etc. The trick to learning words from this books is to learn a little at a time.

Failsafe Is Project Delivery
Published in Hardcover by Ashgate Publishing Company (March, 2001)
Author: Andrew Holmes
Average review score:

A remarkable book in the field of project management....
This book breaks you out of the stale circle of literature about project failure and silver-bullet recipes for success.

Sure, it is a good reference book to have for its extensive coverage of the field. It has been a worthwhile purchase for the quotable statistics and multiple case examples of project failure alone. It is clear that Andrew Holmes is exceptionally well-read in the subject, and the voluminous chapter references to other literature on project management are valuable in their own right.

What makes the case to read this book irresistible, however, are the insights. Some of the chapter headings make the point -"Business and IT: they just can't communicate"; "Over-commitment...when failure is the only option; "Eliminating the culture-gap". The text has scores of refreshing views. Andrew avoids, indeed scorns, the temptation to produce yet another single-ingredient recipe for project success.

If, as I do, you like to collect and use quotations to liven-up your communication, this book is another useful source. Every chapter begins with one or more stimulating extracts. For example, on optimizing delivery: "Software problems are not natural disasters like earthquakes or tornadoes in which human actions are more or less inconsequential. In fact, software disaters are entirely man-made, and we also have the ability to prevent them from occurring if we choose to do so" (Capers-Jones).

Most of the observations and ideas in the book are original and complex, but the text style is lively and readable and there is a novel diagram and illustration on almost every other page.

I can't speak highly enough of this book as a splash of colour in the otherwise rather worthy field of analysis of project failure.

The Family Dog: Its Choice and Training
Published in Paperback by Stanley Paul (September, 1993)
Author: John Holmes
Average review score:

Essential for all dog owners.
This is the 12th edition of this book, which fist appeared 40 years ago. John Holmes explains how instincts govern the behaviour of dogs and how we can use these instincts to effectively and humanely train our dog. He offers invaluable advice on the choice of a dog and on important decisions like neutering dogs and putting old dogs to sleep. The reader is very much brought down to earth by the idea that a dog is not "nearly human" - a dog is a dog and should be treated as such. John Holmes loves dogs and his book is essential for anybody who shares this love.

Fantasy Role Playing Games
Published in Hardcover by Hippocrene Books (December, 1981)
Author: J. Eric Holmes
Average review score:

Interesting and informative
Recently I had discovered role-playing games for the computer, so I was curious when I saw this old and worn book at a nearby public library. The first chapter describes a game in progress of Dungeons and Dragons and a game of Traveller, which I picked up on and thought was verry cool. Even though I wasn't there back then, the book felt very nostalegic. Some of his descriptions of games that aren't there anymore like Bunnies and Burrows, and Gamma World were very intriguing to someone who like me who hasn't found much depth in stuff that's out there for computer. Besides descriptions of various games there is lots of information about the gaming community.

The Films of Sherlock Holmes

Where Did I Come Up With All This Amazing Information?
Question: What famous fictional detective has been the subject of motion pictures since the very beginning of the 20th century?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes; the first Sherlock Holmes film called "Sherlock Holmes Baffled," was one minute in length and was filmed in 1900.

Question: What famous fictional detective has appeared in more movies than James Bond and Indiana Jones combined?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes, of course.

Question: What famous fictional detective has been seen on screen in almost as many disguises as Lon Chaney, "The man of a thousand faces?"

Answer: You guessed it, Sherlock Holmes.

Question: What famous fictional detective has shared an on screen ride with Sigmund Freud, foiled a Nazi plot that might have cost Britain the war, and saved the life of a United States Senator?

Answer: If you guessed Sherlock Holmes again, you're right.

Getting bored? Just a couple more.

Question: What fictional detective has been portrayed on screen by (among dozens of others) John Barrymore, Raymond Massey, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Nicol Williamson, Stewart Granger, and, of course, everyone's favorite, Basil Rathbone?

Answer: I realize this is a real tough one so I'll give you a couple of hints. His first name is Sherlock and his last name is Holmes.

Okay, one last one.

Question: What fictional detective was the father of forensic methodology in the analysis of evidence?

Surprise! Sherlock Holmes.

Where did I come up with all of this amazing information?

Why from THE FILMS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, of course.

THE FILMS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES devotes anywhere from a page to a chapter to almost every Sherlock Holmes movie known to man. Each book segment contains discussions of the film, the actors who starred, and a historical perspective discussing time, place, etc. There are enough still photographs to satisfy the most avid Sherlockian.

For the Sherlock Holmes fan and/or for the film buff, this book is a font of information. For the rest of us, it's pretty darn entertaining.
